In his trash philosophy, old parts and unwanted people share the same soul - while clearly still usable, yet no one is willing to spend time and energy understanding them. And he? He simply helps them live again.
In his youth, Lank poured his entire adolescence into the screw holes of a mechanical factory, only to be cast aside like scrap metal after the war. With nothing left, he wandered to a garbage mountain, using those "trash" to protect a group of refugees and gradually making peace with his fate. When the garbage mountain was completely recycled, he drifted to Doloc Town, continuing his journey of collecting, repairing, and piecing things together.
